Why would people ride a moped instead of a regular bike or motorcycle?

moped
morgan asked:

Moped is half bike and half motorcycle, right? I’ve never seen people riding mopeds here in Southern California where I live.

because they are probably to young to drive motorcycle on roads because you can get a moped and be 14 years old you just have to take a class and then you can drive a moped

  2. adam L Says:

because mopeds save a lot more on gas then motorcycles

    A lot of reasons.
-they are easier to handle than a motorcycle
    -they are cheaper to purchase
    -they get better mileage
    -insurance is cheaper
-you don’t plan on going long distances
    -plates are cheaper
    -easier to repair if needed

You don’t need a motorcycle license to drive a moped, or a scooter that fits within the moped category. So anyone with a regular license can drive it. Also, they are quite inexpensive compared to a motorcycle. And cheaper insurance and better gas mileage. I’ve been tempted to get one myself, but I like highway driving too much.

gas prices, short commute, passager count (one).

They have their advantages…they park in the corner of the garage, they’re light so’s the little lady (sorry , girls, I’m a registered sexist pig) can ride ‘em and move ‘em when she needs to, great mpg, no license/ helmet some places, not likely to get stolen. And their cute, making them a chick magnet (see above).

a moped is basically a motorized bicycle, so yes, BUT most people refer to 50cc scooters as mopeds though, so if you hear someone say “Moped” they probably mean 50cc scooter.

    Why they ride them?
    minimum 75mpg
    CHEAP insurance
    relatively durable
cheaper to buy and maintain than motorcycles.
Easier to ride than big bikes.

  8. Jay P Says:

Because they are more fuel efficient compared to most motorcycles and some people prefer them. For city speeds, a moped can keep up and if you include a scooter as a moped, they also have more storage space ( under the seat ) compared to a motorcycle.

considering the recent fuel hike, soon enough you’ll see a lot of mopeds on the highways in southern california!!

  10. jeenyus720 Says:

cus they get 125+ miles to the gallon

  11. Dave Says:

Cause I’m sure I would kill myself on
a real motorcycle. And a regular bike
only goes so fast if you sweat it out.
    So, moped is halfway compromise.

  12. Chris h Says:

In So Cal they were plentiful during the ’70′s gas crisis. I think the reason you don’t see them now is the helmet requirement, which wasn’t in effect back then.

The reason is obvious. It’s what they can afford.

Not only are they practical for youngsters and old alike. They are tough and reliable. I had one when I was a teenager. I kid you not I jumped a curb on it, the engine cylinder fell off of it onto the ground. I picked the cylinder up with a rag and put it back onto the lower end of the engine. It started right up and kept on going without any problems. I don’t recommend jumping your moped off a curb but his had to have been one of the funniest moments in my life! My brother and friend were with me and can vouch for me on this.
