What is the difference between a 4stroke and a 2stroke moped/scooter?
WHEELS =] asked:
I am just wondering because im getting a scooter as i am 16 and needed to know what is the difference between the two. Also could anybody tell me what kind of BHP a 50cc moped/scooter would have? And does anyone know if the ‘pulse lightspeed’ is a good scooter/moped? Thanks alot its a great help if you know the answer to any of my questions.

2 strokes is an engine who fires every turns.
4 strokes is an engine who fires every 2 turns.
a 2 strokes engine can rev higher
a 4 strokes engine gives more power
2 strokes engine have the lubricating oil mixed in the fuel
4 strokes engine use a sump to hold the oil and some sort of pump to force lubrication.
About the mopeds , I dont know them

First a “user” the 4 stroke is easier to just gas up and go. With the 2 stroke, you have to mix Oil with gasoline. Lot of work.

From technical point of view – 2 stoke have TWICE the power stroke as 4 stroke (or twice as often), so the same 50cc engine is little bit more powerful. And the 2 stroke engine is simpler and lighter.
Good Luck…

2 stroke scooters have to have oil mixed with the petrol or sometimes they have a seperate tank to put it in and it mixes itself.
4 stroke is much like a car as in you fill the oil tank up and it lubes the engine with a pump.
Most new scooters are 4 stroke now anyway (enviromental).
A 50cc scooter will be lucky to 2-3 hph.
I have vespa 125px and they’re great.Cheap to run and insure, but be careful for those on the roads that seem to think scooters are invisable.
Happ scootering!

Not a lot as you are restricted to 30 mph any way.

HELLO
BOTH WILL USE PETROL FROM MAIN TANK
MAIN DIFFERENCE IS THAT
4 STROKE ENGINE NORMALLY HAS A SUMP WITH OIL IN TO LUBRICATE THE INTERNALS OF ENGINE/GEARBOX
2 STROKE REQUIRES 2 STROKE OIL BE MIXED WITH THE PETROL, TO LUBRICATE THE INTERNALS OF THE ENGINE/GEARBOX. THIS IS DONE BY A SECOND SMALL TANK UNDER SEAT AND THE TWO ARE MIXED JUST BEFORE ENTERING ENGINE CAN MEAN CARRYING SMALL CAN OF 2 STROKE OIL. BUT IT DOES THE SAME JOB OF LUBRICATING THE INTERNALS. THE 2 STROKE WILL REV HIGHER THAN THE 4 STROKE AND SMELL OF GRASS OR AT LEAST IT DOES TO ME.
THE BHP MAKE NO DIFFERENCE AS, AS A MOPED IT CANNOT LEGALLY GO MORE THAN 30MPH
PERSONALLY I WOULD GO FOR ONE WITH GEARS RATHER THAN TWIST AND GO
SO DO YOU WANT TO FILL UP WITH PETROL AND GO BUT HAVE TO CHECK THE OIL LEVEL IN THE SUMP (EASY) 4 STROKE OR FILL UP WITH PETROL AT GARAGE AND CHECK AND TOP UP SECOND TANK UNDER SEAT (JUST AS EASY)

the first answer is a little bit misleading about the power thing yes theres more power but 2 stroke will accellerate ALOT faster

You’ve had the technical differences, I’d just add that the machine allegedly produces 2.2bhp – a bit hypothetical when you’re restricted to 50kph (about 31mph).
I have heard that they’re very good when new, and cheap too. They do tend to deteriorate quickly though, especially if not “loved” – that may not be too big a problem if you’re prepared to do like we did in the “good old days”, devote every Sunday morning to scrupulous cleaning and maintenance.

This link below shows how the basic 2 stroke cycle works. Its called two stroke as it does two complete revalutions of the crank to get one power.
I couldnt find a video that showed the four strokes but here is a link that explains with some pictures. Its called four stroke as the crank does four complete revelutions to one power..
Most scooters are restricted so are limited to around 30mph in UK. Older ones may go faster. I Had a Honda C50 that would go 45mph( 4 stroke). But i have ridden on some 50cc scooters that struggle to reach 30mph and need about 2/3 of a mile of flat or downhill to get up to speed.
