What can be wrong with my Motor Scooter?
Porchustopli asked:
My 150cc scooter engine just disengaged the wheal. Riding along at about 35, the thing just stopped going. The engine still starts and stops like normal and revs up, but it won’t go. Any ideas? I’d like to do the work myself, as the repair shop isn’t cheap.

The easiest answer is the CVT belt is broken.
Does the wheel still freely spin?
What is the make/model or is this a chinese rebadge?

Chain is broken or the the clutch is worn out or gearbox is in trouble or drive sprocket stripped

Hi there, it sounds to me like your drive belt has snapped. This is normally under the long engine cover, if you have a kickstart it will be the cover that the kickstart comes out of. On bikes like my son’s Suzuki Katana LC, the rear wheel is attached to the other side of the casing that has the cover I’m referring to attached.
If it’s a standard setup, you would buy a new drive belt, take off the kickstart and take out the screws holding the cover on – usually Allen head screws. When taking the cover off, be careful not to rip the paper gasket or just order a new one with the drive belt just in case – they are really cheap.
Once you have the cover off, you will see straightaway if the belt is broken. Remove the old belt and any debris (There’s usually some fluff/rubber left behind from the old belt and this can jam up the starter mechanism or the kickstart mechanism if left in there) and fit the belt.
You should see 2 “wheels” in there, one small one and one large one. Put the new belt on the large one first, making sure it’s properly in the groove you will see on it. Then put the belt on the small one – you may find it very tight to get on, if it is then just get as much of the belt on as you can, and rotate the big wheel anticlockwise, this will have the effect of pushing the belt onto the smaller wheel. A bit like putting a bike chain back on is the closest analogy.
Then put the gasket & cover back on, screw in the screws (not too tight or you will strip the threads) and you are good to go. It is a relatively simple job that should take no more than an hour if all goes to plan. Good luck

Your scooter probably is one of the CVT type transmissions that uses a drive belt, I suspect that your drive belt is now broken. You will have to remove the large cover on the left side of the engine/tranny unit to access the belt.

Sounds like your CVT belt is broken completely. Not a hard fix, remove the side cover and check out the belt, it will have the size written on it somewhere. Get a replacement one, and while you wait for it to come in, learn how to do the change… not hard to do if you know how, dang near impossible if you don’t!

Yeah sounds like your belt snapped. Malossi carries Kevlar belts for most models. People I know who ride new ones switch to them so it doesn’t break again.

GY6 150cc belt change video . . be sure to install a temporary spacer in the front pulley or gravity will cause the rollers to close the variator and it will need to be disassembled to complete the belt change.&%20current=CIMG0430.flv/&file=http://vid93.photobucket.com/albums/l69/Sussexscooterhead/CIMG0430.flv&t=1180401471&os=1&ap=1

Belt is gone.
Here is the easy way to replace it.
To remove the drive belt.
First get two strong hands, and be carefull,
Be sure to press on the kick starter shaft as you pull the cover off, The shaft stays on the engine, This will prevent the kick start spring from flying off and creating another repair issue.
Paul aka Sporty
#1-First pull the cover off while pressing the kick starter shaft in so the kick start spring wont fly off, The kick starter shaft stays on the motor.
#2-Pull the rear pulley halves to the maximum width with both hands.
#3- Now hold the pulley with your right hand and with your left hand get the belt into the bottom of the rear pulley.
#4- Now stretch the top of the belt as far as you can over the top of the variator outside pulley and rotate the belt by pulling the belt and turning the rear pulley.
#5- Once you have hooked a fan blade with the belt just walk the belt off by rotating the rear pulley and pulling the belt.
To reinstall the belt.
Put the belt on so you can read the text Box on the belt.
#1- Get the belt into the rear pulley as far as it will go buy using Step #2 to remove the belt.
#2- Stretch the belt and hook a fan blade on the variator with the belt.
#3-Once you have hooked a fan blade on the variator with the belt just walk the belt on by rotating the rear pulley and pulling the belt.
#4- Replace the cover on the drive unit, You may have to tap the shaft and cover to get it on all the way.
I have done it that way for 5 years.
