49 cc is the cut off. anything larger will require taking the test and getting the bike endorsement on your license.

While mopeds would be considered a step down for anyone that currently rides a motorcycle, they can be a good form of local transportation and a gateway for the inexperienced rider to get into motorcycling. But, if you plan on leaving city limits, look for something 250cc or above.

The way I see it, you might as well get the MC license.
The moped will get you around, but it really isn’t as good as a motorcycle will be. Getting out of the way has become much more important than it used to be when I rode one. Also, there are always the “I didn’t see him” people. I was a victim. On a bright red and flashy chrome motorcycle. A moped is so much smaller, and will not move fast if / when you need to.

The other answers are correct. A moped is simply an uncontrolable bicycle, Either ride a bike, or Ride a BIKE, if you are on a closed road, like a subdivision, and riding from house to house, OK, Otherwise, Stay off the road!!

Riding a mo ped will prove to be one of the most unsatisfying experiences in your life. Most states have a basic riders 20 hours course – passing the course qualifies you for the practical portion of your license. Passing the written is a simple as reading the manual a couple times paying attention to the motorcycle specific part. Do it, the buy a 250 Honda Rebel or a 250 Yamaha Virago. You’ll be glad you did.

I have called the DMV in illinois and talked to the Secretary of State office too and I know the following facts about moped in IL:

1) You must have a valid drivers licence
a) for a car if under 49cc’s
b) for a small motorcycle if between 49 and 150 cc’s
c) for a big motorcycle if above 150cc’s
2) You must have a title for the moped
3) You must register the moped with the state
4) You most have plates on the moped
5) You must have insurance for the moped.

Motorized pedalcycles, often called mopeds, are low-speed, two-wheeled vehicles. They can be pedaled like a bicycle or driven like a motorcycle. Mopeds are intended for limited use on public roadways. Here are some of the responsibilities of moped drivers:

Moped drivers must have a valid driver’s license.

* LAWS: Moped drivers must obey all signs, signals and traffic laws. They also must obey most bicycle laws.

* SPEED: A moped may not go over 30 miles per hour.

* PASSENGERS: Moped drivers may carry a passenger only when the moped is made for two people. Equipment must include a passenger seat and a passenger footrest.

* EQUIPMENT: If a moped is driven at night, it must have a headlight visible from at least 500 ft. A moped must also have a red reflector on the rear visible from at least 100 to 600 ft.
