Can anyone give me their opinion of renting a moped for use around waikiki?

moped
Boone asked:

I am going to waikiki and would like to rent a moped. I don’t have a motorcycle license so I could only stick with the 50cc. I weight 185lb. Does anyone have experience in using one of these things for riding around the island to pearl harbor and other attractions?? What about parking it around these areas? Any problems with theft? Thanks! Please give me any advice you have!

Oahu has a set of terrible pedestrian and bicycle accident and fatality rates, and Waikiki is noted for traffic congestion on an island that is noted for traffic congestion. You often see tourists on scooters, and I always wonder why. Parking and theft are both problems, yes!

Just about everyone here has a moped.. and they use them alot in Honolulu and Waikiki…

Dangerous, dangerous, dangerous! I am an RN & see lots of individuals in the hospital where I work who ride on motor scooters. Be very careful if you do rent one. Make sure you use a helmet. It will be tough to get out to Pearl, as you will need to go on all surface roads, You can’t use the highway to get there.

Using a slow moving under powered vehicle around traffic congested w/ locals speeding to work and tourists looking at the sights? And it sounds like some inexperience talking here? Bam!!!!! Get insurance medical that is.

I use to own a moped for 3 years in Waikiki and had some friends that worked at shops there. Make sure you get a helmet when you rent one. A moped will cost you around $40per day or maybe $250for the week. Parking you can park the moped pretty much anywhere. Make sure you lock the back tire to something solid otherwise it could get stolen.

I never really road my moped west much. But getting to Diamond Head, Haunama Bays and that part of the island is very easy. Have Fun
