Buying and learning how to ride a motor scooter?

motor scooter
Katie C asked:

I want to get one of those motor scooters (convenient for transportation where I will be living next year), BUT I don’t know how to ride one! I think it must be pretty simple – easier to ride than a motorcycle. How can I learn how to ride one before buying one?

Thanks!

If you can ride a bicycle pretty well, and know when to apply the brakes, then you can ride a scooter. I am a older woman, and I learned to ride two years ago. I started out a little wobbley, but got the hang of it.

First what I would do is ask if the shop had a used bike that you could practice on. Then find a parking lot. Just let them know that you need to get your sea legs and that you are truely interested in purchasing a Scooter. If they want to make the sell, they will find something that you can ride.

    1. Be confident
2 Know where the kill switch is (if there is one)
3 Learn how to apply the brakes (no different then that of a bicycle)
    4 Relax and have fun.
    5. Speed up just a little and then fall back on the speed.
6 Wear a helmet (as everyone should)
7 Know that Traffic laws apply to Scooters just like that of a car.
8 Stay with a 49 or 50cc because anything higher than that will require you to have a Motorcycle License Endorsement.
    9. Most states require that you have a Drivers license or at least you are 16 years of age.

Now, if you don’t know how to ride a bicycle, start with that before purchasing a Motor Scooter.

    Happy Learning
    Happy Hunting and
    Good Luck

I’ve been riding Harley’s since the early ’70′s.Last summer my friend bought one of those little scooters and insisted I take it for a spin, That thing was the hardest thing I ever rode,it didn’t seem very stable to me. Maybe it is one of those things you have to get used to.If I got one I would definately practice in an empty parking lot somewhere.

Check out the M.S.F. on the web and sign up for a basic rider course. Or check with local dealers to get info on the M.S.F.

I second the MSF course and want to make clear:
Scooters are not “like bicycles” they are moptorcylcles with smaller wheels and should be treated as such. Get a scooter, learn how to ride safely, wear protective gear and understand that most cars and trucks do not see motorcycles. Ride that way and you’ll be safer. Have fun, they are a great form of transportation and for some, much more.

    Hi Katie
DECA website advertises 3hr course @ $67 for people who have limited or no riding experience. They supply scooters or motorbikes and have locations all over Vic. Good luck – its worth it!

    Definetly take the MSF course.
